Rock pleasures on American Idol 8

IT”S not typical for a group of full-blooded rockers to make it to the final phase of American Idol but in Season 8, looks like we’re going to be watching them battle head-to-head. I would liken them to a handyman in TX who doesn’t settle for one method in conducting handyman repair service such as roof and tile repair, or electric concerns that only a handyman would be capable of handling.

From the first batch of performers I prayed would make it to the Top 12 was Alexis Grace and she did!

Michael Sarver was also good but I wasn’t crazy about his choice of song. Danny Gokey was obviously impressive, too, but I’m leaving him out since he does not fall in the category of rock music.

Then the Idol stage was prepared last Wednesday for the second batch and what do you know? Rockers dominated it once more. Allison Iraheta staged an awesome performance of “Alone” by Heart. This redhead 16-year-old is undeniably a dark horse and she’s among those I’m rooting for in this competition.

Apart from Allison, 27-year-old Adam Lambert is also my favorite. Who can forget what Paula Abdul said after his exemplary rendition of The Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction”? The 80s pop artist and Idol judge said, “I’m watching an Adam Lambert concert!” His phrasing and manner of playing with the notes are really brilliant. Simon Cowell thought Adam staged one of those “love it or hate it” performances but personally, I think it was a blast!

Kris Allen also made it to the Top 12 with his average performance of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.” He looks like a good kid but not very impressive.

From the third batch, I hope single mom Lil Rounds and pianist Scott MacIntyre get through to Top 12.

Writing about music and other showbiz stuff used to be fun, but since moving to a company whose nature is distant from showbiz, I realized writing about extensive topics or subjects is where the thrill lies. I understand some writers prefer to write about their object of interest. That's good, but nothing beats touching on all aspects of life. By doing so, I experience life as it is.
